Guitar Hero was just the opening act. MTV and the developers of that video game have a headliner in the works called Rock Band, which lets four music lovers gig together in person or online.

Expected in stores for the year-end holidays, the Electronic Arts game (no price set) for the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3 will be played with four instrument-based video game controllers: two guitars (lead and bass), a drum kit and a microphone.

In the popular game Guitar Hero, players tap color-coded fret keys and strum a guitar-shaped controller in time with scrolling on-screen notes. Rock Band "takes the core premise of Guitar Hero and expands it tenfold," says Alex Rigopulos, co-founder of Harmonix, which developed the game and the Karaoke Revolution games. "It lets you create a complete collaborative band."

MTV is supplying creative and financial support to Rock Band's development, as well as helping make deals with various music publishers.

That means Rock Band will have performances by the original artists. In most previous music games, almost every song is done by a cover band. For Rock Band, some labels plan to supply original recordings. "This game offers a meaningful way for labels to participate in a segment of entertainment they, for the most part, have not been able to," MTV's Jeff Yapp says.

The songs on the new game haven't been revealed yet. Current games include the Allman Brothers, Joan Jett, Kansas, Nirvana and Wolfmother. "We'll be covering a great breadth, from metal to classic rock to Southern rock to everything in between," Rigopulos says.

Online connectivity is a key to the game. The developers envision additional songs for online purchase beyond those in the retail version. And players need not be together to jam. "You could have one guitarist in Germany and another one in Texas, a drummer in New York and a singer from somewhere else, and they can play together online," EA's David DeMartini says.

The music game phenomenon continues its crescendo. 2005's Guitar Hero and this year's Guitar Hero II (both for the Sony PlayStation 2) are top sellers, having sold about 3 million copies total, according to The NPD Group. Research firm Interpret says about 6.8 million have played Guitar Hero II.

A version of the game for Microsoft's Xbox 360 is in stores on Tuesday ($90), and Hands-On Mobile today is expected to announce a cellphone version.

Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter expects music gaming to grow. "Socially interactive musical games will work well, especially if they have a 'party game' aspect to them," he says. Rock Band "could definitely expand the game demographics."

Laraque brings TEH TOUGHNESS~! to pretty much watch Crosby/Malkin/Staal/Brian Boitano's back, and Roberts also brings the grit, along with a fair amount of playoff experience. Infact, Garrr won a cup with the Flames with Crosby was two years old. Hah.

San Jose Sharks

Getting Bill Guerin pretty much solidifies the fact that the Sharks are making the finals this year. Putting him on a line with Patrick Marleau isn't even going to be sensible. Ville Nieminen was completely expendable. Craig Rivet for Josh Gorges and a first rounder is preeetty smooth too. Guerin is going to fit into San Jose really, really well.

New York Islanders

Um, is this the same team run by Charles Wang who...well....take any trade/signing over the last few years. They signed Rick DiPietro for 15 years! 15 years! But apparently, Garth Snow makes an awesome General Manager. Picking up Richard Zednik for a second rounder was a steal, and getting Ryan frickin Smyth for Robert Nilson, Ryan O'Marra and a first rounder is an even better deal. RYAN SMYTH! They're going to have no problem getting that one extra point to get into playoff contention.

Vancouver Canucks

Bryan Smolinski and Brent Sopel for picks? HA! But apparently, they're talking about playing Smolinski on the third line with Naslund? umm, what? They also automatically win for how the Luongo/Bertuzzi trade worked out, too. Mike Keenan's comments on that all day were priceless.

Atlanta Thrashers

Keith Tkachuk is pretty much going to ensure that when they get to the playoffs for the first time, there's a good chance they're going to do well. Glen Metropolit is kinda pricy to give up for a rental player, but Pascal Dupuis for Alex Bourret (who?) is a steal. Signing Jason Krog from waivers is a beautiful sight, too.

James Duthie

For being consistantly entertaining all day long.

James Duthie asks Burke about acquiring Todd Bertuzzi: "James, I answer that question and before I get done this interview Bill Daly is on the phone fining me"

Duthie: Is there one guy you're after right now?

Burke: Yes.

Duthie: Does he have blond or dark hair?

Thumbs down to:

Buffalo Sabres

Actually, a million, billion thumbs down to: the Sabres. It does not matter how good Ryan Miller is, you do NOT trade Martin Biron for a second round pick. It makes absoultely no sense. Biron could very well be a starting goaltender, and having him back up Miller in the playoffs is the most logical thing to do. Hell, they could have traded him for something to, you know, help out their injury-ridden team. They didn't even repackage the pick in the Dainius Zubrus deal! Zubrus for a first founder is pretty steep too, but it's kind of a toss up. Nobody on the Sabres is Alex Ovechkin, but they're pretty darn talented, and could probably help Zubrus put some points on the board. It's just completely mindboggling how they could trade Biron for a second round pick. It makes absoultely no sense, and Philly got a steal. And Ty Conklin? What the hell? Mikko Lehtonen is a decent backup I suppose, but not even close to Biron. And speaking of the Caps..

Washington Capitals

Unless Zednik and Zubrus are rentals only, the Caps are idiots. There's a good chance that they are rentals only, but still. Ridiclious. Even if they are rentals, the point of being sellers/renters is to get something decent in return.

Montreal Canadiens

As my love for the Leafs subsides, so does my hatred for Montreal. And there is absolutely no excuse for not making any deals today. And no, signing Michael Leighton off of waivers doesn't count. Giving up Rivet for a low first round pick is ridiclious, and with Sheldon Souray probably not resigning over the summer, there is absoultely no excuse for not trading a Souray/Rivet package to get a pretty good goaltender, because Aebischer is horribly inconsistant lately, and when Huet comes back, and if they make the playoffs, there's no telling how he's going to play. And if they didn't trade Souray, they could have signed Bryan Berard through waivers! He would have been a suitable replacement for Rivet, with or without any trades today. When they said Marty Biron was traded and didn't know where, I assumed it was Montreal at first. Bob Gainey is a confusing, confusing man. I'm calling the Islanders taking Montreal's playoff spot.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Two points out of a playoff spot. TWO! You'd think that they would have gone out and made some sort of splash. And no, re-signing Darcy Tucker and trading one of your top defensive prospects for Yanic Perreault is not making a splash. Perreault is good, and is having an awesome season, but is definitely a depth guy, and the Leafs have a decent amount of depth. Apparently, it would have only taken a first rounder to get Roberts, which they refused to offer, despite Roberts publically stating that he wanted to go back to Toronto (or Ottawa). Bertuzzi also stated that he wanted to play for Toronto, and it only took the Wings to give up Shawn Matthias and some low picks to get him. They also turned down an offer that involved Ryan Smyth, too. I strongly dislike JFJ Jr.

I do love Yanic Perreault though, even if he doesn't have a huge impact. Which he still might.

Detroit Red Wings

Kyle Calder. Enough said.

Well, maybe not. Giving up Jason Williams for Calder was incredibly stupid. Calder is definitely up there on the list of underachieving/not living up to their potential players. The Bertuzzi deal was a friggin steal, but there's no promises that he's going to be healthy either. That one was worth the risk though. Kyle Calder? Sigh.

Boston Bruins

You do not give up Brad Boyes for somebody that most people have never heard of.

Edmonton Oilers

Last, but definitely not least.

The thing about trading Ryan Smyth is that there's a good chance that he won't resign in the summer now, because essentially, they couldn't work out a deal, so they pretty much tossed him to the Islanders for next to nothing. If you can't resign him, fine, but they could have gotten a star player in return, no problem. Smyth is the face of the franchise, and the heart and soul of the team. To let him go like that screams throwback to Gretzky and Messier, who is coincidentially being honored tonight in Edmonton. I don't think anybody who actually read this needs any explaination as to why trading Ryan Smyth is a stupid move, but apparently, there's a very good chance that he won't resign on July 1st, so any justification in him being a rental player could very well be out the window. And if that's the case, then Nilson and O'Marra suck, and they just gave away the key part of their franchise for nothing. End of story. Enter another ten years of shittiness for the Oilers. Bring back the offensively strange looking orange and blue.

---

Ottawa gets thumbs in the middle for not doing anything significant to boost their depth's offence, but gets a billion points for signing my all-time favorite depth player Oleg Saprykin. The Dallas/LA trade of Norstrom/Pushkarov/3rd rounder/4th rounder for Modry/Fransson/2008 1st rounder/2nd rounder/3rd rounder wins for most incredibly even trade.

RYAN SMYTH!
